What are the different types of safety plans?

Safety plans vary on the person as well as the situation. The different safety plans can apply to those who:

  • Are experiencing a violent confrontation.
  • Are planning to LEAVE their abuser.
  • Have LEFT their abuser.
  • Have children and or pregnant.
  • Have a friend/family member that is in an abusive relationship.

Planning Ahead

There is nothing wrong with preparing for the future when it comes to domestic violence. There are specific things you need to think about though when you’re getting ready to finally escape your abuser or are looking for someone to reach out to. Domestic violence hotlines, friends, family, local police departments or churches are all great places to start if you’re ready to talk about what’s going on behind the walls of your home. I know as someone who was affected that sometimes reaching out to anyone is hard because a lot of the time you have a million and one emotions flowing through you. You may be scared, embarrassed, still attached, completely dependent on your partner or all of the above. Remember that his/her behavior is NOT your fault.
